Background Research is also known as Background Checks, Suitability Checks and Probity Checks. This is the process of looking up and authenticating various pieces of personal and confidential information on an individual.
This information can be used to verify whether an individual is being truthful and transparent about their credentials. In turn, this becomes a pro-active step in reducing risk based on the information.
Background checks are often requested by employers on job candidates for employment screening, especially on candidates seeking a position that requires high security or a position of trust. These checks are often used by employers as a means of ascertaining a job applicant’s academic claims, character, and capabilities as per the job profile, and to identify potential hiring risks. A study showed that half of all reference checks done on prospective employees differed between what the job applicant provided and what the source reported.
While most people might say it’s an unseemly act to run background checks on your potential dates prior to asking them out, the same does not hold true when hiring a new employee. Taking a chance on a blind date might result in a bad evening but there’s absolutely no doubt that making a wrong hiring decision can haunt your company, your other employees and your client base.
Other checks that can be conducted include, but are not limited to, driver’s licence checks, vehicle accident history and ownership, psychometric testing and skill assessments, directorship, criminal profile and financial checks.
